THE KETTLE CREST TREK IS A GO!!!
Here I go again, and this time it's gonna be a long one! Almost 35 miles along the spectacular Kettle Crest Trail, from Sherman Pass to Boulder Pass. The date is July 8th thru 15th. I've looked around on the net, and was surprised at the lack of information about this trail. Well, that will all change when my trip is over! You will be able to find LOTS of pictures and info about it. VERY LUCKY for me that the fiddle player in my band happens to be the guy who grooms those trails! Thanks to Blaine, for the EXCELLENT knowledge of the water sources along the trail. Below is shown the EXCLUSIVE QSL CARD that will be used on ALL of my treks. It is the one to go for, as it could turn out to be a collector's piece....to get this card, you have to have a contact with me while on a trek. With the altitude I'll be at on this one, there should be good propagation for my QRP operations on the trail. Also shown: My Yeasu FT-817ND QRP all band, all mode, that goes where I go... me operating from the Alaskan Ferry... and as I looked around, this AWESOME picture of our flag jumped out at me... Next is the evening and, night time, no-flash view of my camp on North Fork of Trout Creek. You'll notice that the TREK QSL is designed around the no-flash photo....The next 2 photos are what I see looking East from our porch. The shot on the right shows White Mountain, the location of Sherman Pass, and the starting point for the Kettle Crest Trek....Yes, it is the one with the snow on it.....No there will be no snow when I hit-the-trail.
The SOLAR PANEL has evolved into much more than just that, as you can see by looking at the back-side view of the panel. Shown are the source battery pack, used to charge 12v items like the cell-phone, digital recorder, etc....The 12volt socket and cell-phone charger are shown in their 'stowed' position(cell phone for redundant backup)....The meter shows battery level of whatever is connected to the panel...Total weight=3 pounds....that includes the extra full set of batteries in the rose-colored case. A fair trade to have a 'virtually un-ending' power source onboard....
Why the Kettle Crest?
Because it is there, my friend....the age-old reason. This is just another of the many things I've 'always wanted to do', and never did! You know, the 'Bucket' list. Well now, I'm doing ALL of those things. Besides, I look out at those gorgeous mountains, everyday! I suppose it was only a matter of time before they called to me hard enough. Now, with the date set, my old backpacking buddy, Richard, has confirmed he can make it, so I'M PACKING!!~~FOR THE GUYS~~
Listen folks.....I'm doing this for alot of reasons. Probably the biggest, is that I still can! After 2 heart attacks almost did me in, I was forced into medical retirement. But I've fought my way back to good enough health to do this again, despite what the doctors told me I would be limited to. I don't give up easily...
I'm also doing these treks for the hams out there who can't anymore. Folks like Chuck(K7VRE), who sent me the AWESOME Tac-Pac that protects my FT-817 on these treks... Also, my old friends Rick(KN6LD), Frank(KB7NLG), and Bob(W7LMA)....This trek is for ALL of you guys! I truly hope you all get some enjoyment from following along VIA ham radio...I will make every aspect of the trip accessable on or from this page, and will look forward to talking to lots of folks on the various bands, every afternoon/evening when we make camp, and in the mornings during coffee...I made sure the pace would be slow enough to allow for LOTS of radio work, photography, side trips, etc...
